If you could permanently ban a word from general usage, which one would it be? Why?
Idk honestly. If I could ban a word that wouldn’t be fair to people as a whole. As human beings we’re experience a range of emotion throughout our days let alone lives. An array and odd coupling of different sensations in different situations and to reduce the language by eradicating words is crazy to me.
Yes there are words that harm and were created solely for the purpose of harming however throughout history and time, the intention of those words have been transmuted into, great and powerful emotional and cultural meanings. For instance, Yeah most of our presidents have probably used the N word multiple times and slaveowners did also, but if racist whites never said “nigger” a bunch then where would we be today? YG’s hit single wouldn’t exist, A lot of comedians wouldn’t have an act and we would’nt have the gem thats the Michael richards incident. They walked so we could run with niggas ” My culture is one that has at some point in history been reduced to one word, the word has become taboo now, however, in some cases we use it as a term of endearment. In other cases, some of us want to stay as far away from the word as possible. In a lot of cases, those whose ancestors didn’t endure the use of it are even saying it…
Words themselves are reductive in their nature really. When was the last time you experienced a pit of heavy emptiness, or a kind of weighted void in your gut as you picked up a phone call to your mother choking back tears as she stumbled through explaining that your fathers being rushed to the hospital?? How does the word “sad” suffice for that? How does ‘scared’ suffice for that? Even frightened, melancholy, shocked, flabbergasted, angry, etc. no matter how articulate you become, words are never enough.
Words are emotional microcosms packaged into a mason jar. That is why we have things such as tone, expression, inflection, volume, gestures, aroma, etc. we are always trying to add para linguistic to words in order to convey the closest original feeling to the listener/receiver however, will they ever truly elicit that response? No, not ever like the original feeling or experience being described was received.
So overall would I ban any words? Nah
But in short for the sake of the prompt? Yeah, I’d ban the word “hysterical” because it is not even close to describing how funny it is to see people get cancelled for speaking words of bigotry.
I’m no cancel culture cop but you do gotta admit, that’s some funny shit my nigga !
